The goal is simple: watch 52 films by women. Last year, I attempted to start this challenge in October, and I didn’t really keep up. This year, although I’ve already had a late start, I intend to keep it up. One film each week (or for me, now it’s 1.04) shouldn’t be hard, and I’m excited to see the types of work I get to uncover during this challenge. I hope to at least ensure each film I watch was directed by a woman, but even better if the movie centers women and their stories. After all, we’ve got a lot to say.

1.    Little Women directed by Greta Gerwig

What a beautiful film to start my challenge. To watch it, I broke one of my own personal cardinal sins: watching the movie before reading the book. This time, I’m glad I did it. It made me so happy to see the March sisters, with their little quirks and fights, come together for the important things in their lives. I’m starting to realize that I love Greta Gerwig’s way of storytelling. Little Women and Ladybird both had a normalcy about them that made even the small parts of life seem rich. I cried during both movies (in Ladybird once, in Little Women thrice), and I left the theater joyful and empowered to be a little woman in a big world. I’ll definitely be reading the book this year.
